SafeZones Project

The Montrose Center’s SafeZones Project is an in-school support program that works with school support counselors to create an empowering space for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning students.

According to the 2023 US National Survey on Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People by the Trevor Project, 41% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered suicide over the last year, 56% were unable to access mental health care, and up to 53% experienced some form of bullying or harassment at school.  This highlights the importance of providing support to these students.

The primary intervention of the SafeZones Project is a psychoeducational support group for LGBTQ+ students facilitated by a licensed therapist from the Montrose Center, which helps students learn how to support one another in the face of issues like bullying, discrimination, stigma, and shame.  Additional services may be available by request, such as cultural diversity training for counselors, school staff, and administrators, and/or referrals to individual counseling for youth and family counseling services.

Youth who are interested in joining can email us at htowsley@montrosecenter.org. Students must have a signed parental consent form in order to attend the group.

If a school is interested in hosting a SafeZones Project group for their students, they can also reach out us to inquire about starting a group.
