Integrative Writing Workshops for Teens – 111
November 19, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Two award-winning writers offer free writing workshops on three Saturdays (September 17, October 15, and November 19) at the Montrose Center geared toward LGBTQIA+ teens (ages 13-18) to foster collective healing during the pandemic and encourage writing as a holistic and sustainable practice. Using innovative, research-based, and antiracist approaches, the workshops will integrate practices like meditation, functional movement, collaging, and visual art in the teaching of writing. The final workshop will culminate in a public reading showcasing new interdisciplinary work by both instructors and the students. Our goals are to create a safe space for the creative expression of young people, especially those who identify as LGTBQIA+, to foster collective healing during the pandemic, and also to challenge norms often present in writing classrooms that emphasize correctness overgrowth. Integrating our practices as writers, teachers, queer artists, and human beings, we welcome seemingly disparate practices into the same space and push the boundaries of what a writing workshop can be. |
