United Way Boosts Funding for GLBT Counseling

Each year since Montrose Counseling Center became an affiliate agency, United Way of Greater Houston has injected needed funding into our LIFE Counseling, Anti-Violence, and Way Out Recovery programs. The money is used to subsidize sliding scale payments for GLBT clients who are uninsured and financially-limited, and who are the most vulnerable (such as youth and seniors).

This year, the LIFE Counseling Program will receive an increase in annual funding over the next three years, bringing total funding to approximately $140,000 per year by 2015. Besides supporting its affiliates financially, United Way offers a wealth of resources, including leadership and computer training, gifts in-kind, and opportunities to network and collaborate with other local organizations. Last, but never least, is the 211 Help Line and resource directory which links residents in need with providers and assistance programs citywide.

What you may not know about United Way is that it is largely volunteer-driven, relying heavily upon the talent and guidance of professionals and leaders from Houston’s private sector. Every other year, a group of these volunteers visits MCC to learn about our programs and services, and how United Way dollars are put to work. These individuals also influence the level and types of support we receive.

United Way is perhaps best known for workplace giving. If you have not participated in your employer’s United Way campaign, now is a great time time to consider joining. Giving is easy, usually through a monthly or annual payroll deduction, and you choose the amount. Your company’s human resources representative can tell you more about the details.

Please join us in thanking United Way of Greater Houston for their ongoing support of MCC, and for helping to create healthier futures for Houston’s GLBT citizens.
