Montrose Counseling Center Responds to President Obama’s Announcement

Montrose Counseling Center applauds President Barack Obama for his historic announcement today that he personally supports marriage equality for same-sex couples. According to MCC Executive Director, Ann J. Robison, PhD, “Of particular importance was that the president used the word ‘marriage’ in his support of LGBT equality.”

MCC agrees with the American Psychiatric Association’s declaration that “marriages” and “unions” are not equal. When communities of people are being told that they are not worthy of the same rights and privileges as the rest of society, it can have a harmful effect on the community members’ mental health and well-being.

Any time a majority is able to impose its values and judgments on a minority, it will have an impact on self esteem, sense of safety and belonging for all members of the minority group.

On behalf of our clients, volunteers, staff and board of directors, as well as our future GLBT leaders in the HATCH Program, MCC thanks President Obama for allowing his position to evolve to one that supports equality and fairness for all U.S. residents.
