“One of the barriers we have in helping those who need it most is the stigma associated with having a social worker,” says Ann J. Robison, Executive Director at Montrose Counseling Center. Think of the last crime drama you watched. It was the social worker who tore children away from their family. What about the last news story? Could the overworked social worker have prevented someone with a mental illness from committing a horrible crime?
Robison follows up with, “If that’s what society thinks about social workers, they are not seeing the majority of the good that’s being done. We see little success stories every day.”
March is Social Worker Awareness Month, and we couldn’t accomplish as much as we do without social workers in our counseling and case management programs. These are the people who weave the threads of resiliency and advocacy together to make a safety net for our clients.
