Community Rallies to Provide Immediate Support Post-Harvey

Volunteers with Items in 114As Houston’s LGBTQ Center, the community turns to us in times of crisis. And we, in turn, count on the generous members of our community to help get the work done.  With your help, we were able to start meeting the needs of our community before the storm had even passed.

The love and support we’ve received has been astounding!

Before we even put out the call for help, individuals reached out, offering to their time and talents. As shelters popped up around Houston to serve those displaced from their homes, we sent therapists and volunteers to help on the front lines. After Ike and Katrina, we heard stories of shelters not being safe for our community – trans people getting arrested for using the restroom… people not being allowed to access the appropriate clothing…

Our presence throughout the city helped ensure that the shelters were safe and affirming for ALL Houstonians.

Yesterday, our offices opened, and we began providing direct services to clients. Staff reached out to our most vulnerable clients to ensure they were okay. Volunteer and donors came together to ensure that hot meals were served to our seniors. Case managers worked directly with those most in need, helping them fill out insurance and FEMA paperwork, and providing financial support to get their immediate needs met.  Because of your generous donations, we were also immediately able to provide them with shelf stable food, hygiene supplies, and bottled water.CM Distributing to Ct

There’s still so much to do, but with your continued help, we know it will get done.

In the days and weeks to follow, we will  begin recovery efforts. We have established the Hurricane Harvey LGBTQ Disaster Relief Fund to help people rebuild their lives. The funds we’ve raised will be given to LGBTQ individuals, those who are HIV positive, and our allies to help them with counseling, case management, and direct assistance of shelf stable food, furniture, housing, and more.

Our dedicated case management team is on call now to help homeless youth, seniors, people living with HIV, hate crime survivors, and those devastated by the storm.

Please don’t hesitate to call us for help! (713)529-0037
