Can you believe that Pride month is already almost upon us? That means the annual Hatch Youth Prom is just around the corner. As in years past, Hatch Youth is crazy busy right now getting ready to throw down another night to remember, with dancing, decor, food, fun and memories you’ve come to expect from one of Houston’s greatest Pride traditions.
As LGBT rights rocket forward, this year’s Prom theme gives us a rare opportunity to reflect. “A Very Hatchy Prom” lovingly looks back at our 25+ year history, with photos and memorabilia. It’s also the last dance for our charming mascot “Hatchy,” who retired last year when the organization took on a new look.
For many LGBTQIA youth and adults alike, high school prom is a perennially exclusive affair that refuses to honor us as queer folk. So, we created our own version of the traditional dance that is always just how we like it. It used to be called the “Alternative Prom,” but dressing up in the outfit you picked, dancing with the person you want to dance with, and expressing yourself as the person you are is not really an alternative so much as who we are and what we do, all day, every day.
The Hatch Youth Prom will be held here at the Center on the first floor, Friday, June 6, 7:00 p.m. to midnight. Non-youth can attend for $25. Get into a fine tux, a knock-out dress, or come as you are, but don’t forget your dancing shoes! This kiki is marvelous…
