The school year began with the painful reminder that Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender youth face daily harassment and bullying by their classmates. It is that climate that prompted HATCH, 19 years ago, to hold its first GLBT prom. This spring, it’s a time of celebration for these youth, who have made it through a year filled with their ups and downs reflected through local and national headlines. The HATCH youth fittingly have chosen “Over the Rainbow” as this year’s theme. The prom will be held on Friday, June 10, from 7 p.m. to midnight. The HATCH youth extend an invitation to the rest of the community, especially those who may not have had the opportunity to attend their own proms, those who want a “do-over,” or those who simply want to support a safe and sober alternative celebration. The prom is free for GLBT and Questioning youth, and their allies, between the ages of 13 and 20. Adults and former HATCHlings always are welcome with a $25 donation at the door.
