The Holidays are usually a time that people look forward to celebrating. For many LGBTQ families experiencing food insecurity that is not the case.

More than 1 in 4 LGBTQ adults (27%) – approximately 2.2 million LGBTQ people – experienced food insecurity last year when they did not have enough money for the food that they or their families needed, compared to 17% of non-LGBTQ adults. That is why the Montrose Center in partnership with Bunnies on the Bayou each year distributes holiday food baskets to our LGBTQ and HIV+ clients in need during the holiday season.

These include persons who are chronically unemployed, seniors and disabled individuals surviving on fixed incomes, individuals in transitional housing after fleeing from abusive partners, and persons who are starting over after recovering from addictions. Last year, of the 104 households that received holiday baskets, 6 were headed by seniors. There were 104 children in these households, and 169 adults, for a total of 271 people who received a happy holiday thanks to the Holiday Basket program.

Thanks to a generous investment by Bunnies on the Bayou this year we are doubling the number of holiday baskets to 200 to help serve families impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

We Need Your Help!

Doubling the number of Holiday Baskets is no small task! That is why you are invited to help with the stuffing and dressing of the 200 Holiday Baskets on  Sunday, December 10  from 1 PM to 5 PM at the Montrose Center. This Holiday Extravaganza: A Sunday Funday Event will include loads of fun and community.
