On Wednesday, November 6, the Montrose Center hosted the Together in Community Rally, bringing over 100 of Houston’s LGBTQ+ community members together for an evening of connection and empowerment. The event highlighted the passionate enthusiasm within Houston’s LGBTQ+ community towards providing a safe, affirming, supportive environment for all those who may be feeling stree or anxiety around recent election results. In addition to lively music and dancing, the evening included heartfelt words from Houston’s leaders and advocates, reflecting the Center’s commitment to fostering a strong, united LGBTQ+ community, locally as well as nationally.
The evening’s speakers included Councilmember Mario Castillo, District H, Councilmember Abbie Kamin, District C, Ian L. Haddock of The Normal Anomaly Initiative, Brad Pritchett of Equality Texas, Tammi Wallace of the Greater Houston LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, and Reverend Leslie Jackson of St. Peter United Churches. Each speaker shared their insights on the importance of community solidarity, particularly in the face of recent or future challenges for LGBTQ+ individuals, and emphasized the Center’s dedication to supporting Houston’s transgender and non-binary residents. The Center would like to extend special thanks to DJ Lotus Inferno Carl Han for his donating his invaluable time and talent for the event.
As a reflection of the Center’s mission to offer ongoing support, Dr. Megan Mooney and Sonya Gonzales led support groups for youth and adults, engaging more than 70 participants in meaningful conversations about mental health, resilience, and community care. Recognizing the current climate’s unique challenges—especially for transgender and non-binary individuals facing intersecting oppressions—the Montrose Center remains dedicated to providing critical resources and advocacy for all LGBTQ+ Houstonians.
With gratitude for its partnerships and support from city and county officials, the Center remains a vital resource for mental health, empowerment, and community.
