A Note From Our CEO: Reflecting on One Year at the Montrose Center

This week marks my one-year anniversary as CEO of the Montrose Center, and I want to take a moment to share my gratitude for the warm welcome I’ve received from so many of you. Thank you for accepting me into this incredible community.

When I began this journey, I committed to spending my first year listening—and that listening has been invaluable. It’s given me a deep understanding of the Center’s history, the impact we’re making today, and your hopes for the future of the Center.

I’ve learned about the essential role the Center played during the height of the HIV and AIDS epidemic, offering care, support, and a judgment-free space during some of the darkest moments our community has faced, work that continues to be integral to our mission. I’ve heard stories from those of you who grew up in our Hatch Youth program, finding community, learning life skills, and discovering a sense of joy and pride that still resonate with you today.

I’ve discovered that for many, the Center is deeply woven into your coming-out journeys, it was a place where you found support groups, therapy and connections that have helped you embrace your identities and find courage in your authenticity. From youth to seniors, and everyone in between, I’ve come to understand how truly special the Montrose Center is to this community. It’s an honor to work alongside our incredible team to build on this legacy of care and dedication.

This year of listening has also revealed opportunities for us to expand and deepen our work—ensuring more people can access our services and experience the support we’re uniquely positioned to provide. I’m grateful to everyone who has shared feedback and ideas, and I look forward to continuing this collaborative journey with you as we grow the Montrose Center into an even stronger hub for community wellness, resources, creativity, and joy.

I’m especially proud of what we’ve accomplished together so far, much of it shaped by your input. A few highlights include:

  • Creating our first-ever Community Advisory Board, giving community members the opportunity to work directly with staff to develop new programs, identify areas for growth, and co-create solutions. This initiative is just beginning, and I’m excited to see where it leads.
  • Supporting trans individuals statewide by partnering with the Trans Legal Aid Clinic of Texas to help up to 500 trans and non-binary Texans secure gender-affirming identification documents.
  • Resourcing our community during Hurricane Beryl by providing more than $100,000 in direct financial assistance to hundreds of our LGBTQ+ neighbors in need.
  • Convening community action after the recent election. What began as a rally quickly transformed into a strategy-focused summit with 17 partner organizations—proving that when we link arms, we are stronger together. I’m proud the Montrose Center continues to be a coordinating force for Houston’s LGBTQ+ community.

As I look ahead to my second year, I recognize we’re entering uncertain times. Our community is facing unprecedented challenges, but no matter what comes our way, the Montrose Center’s staff and Board remain steadfast in our mission. We’re more dedicated than ever to our vision of co-creating a world where all LGBTQ+ individuals can realize their fullest potential.

To quote Jane Fonda’s recent speech, “community is power,” and we need community – and the power it creates – more than ever before. The Montrose Center is a key hub for LGBTQ+ community life and action, and we want you to be a part of that. A few ways you can get involved:

  • Donate: Every dollar counts, and every dollar will go directly towards our mission of empowering our community.
  • Volunteer: Support the community through your time and expertise.
  • Follow Us: Keep up-to-date on everything going on at the Center by joining our email list and following our social channels at @montrosecenter.

If current events are weighing on you, please remember: you are not alone. If you need someone to talk to, a group to share your concerns with, a place to socialize or a way to give back, we’re here for you. This is your LGBTQ+ community center—and together, we’ll continue to build a Houston where everyone can thrive.

With gratitude and hope,
Avery Belyeu (She/Her)
