HATCHy's Birthday – Let's Dance & Let's Walk Together

It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago, a lesbian teen asked her church about forming a group that was dedicated to providing a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. She was the very first HATCHling. We don’t know her name, but we do know that she’s all grown up now and that what she started continues to thrive as Montrose Counseling Center’s HATCH Program.

Five years later came the HATCH Alternative Prom. Back then they were grooving to Michael Jackson, En Vogue, TLC and Sir Mix-A-Lot. And we’re pretty sure someone played Right Said Fred’s I’m Too Sexy, and they slow-danced to Vanessa William’s Save the Best for Last. Today they listen to Beyonce, Ke$ha, Rihanna, L’il Wayne and Usher. In fact last year, there was a Lady Gaga dance-off.

20th Annual HATCH PromWe’d love to have you come to the prom this year, especially if you didn’t have the chance to attend yours when you were younger. Or maybe you didn’t get to wear what you wanted to wear. Or bring the date you really wanted to bring. The youth prom committee chose “Year of the Dragon Ball” as the theme, and the dance will be held on June 8, from 7 p.m. – Midnight at the GLBT Cultural Center, 401 Branard St., 1st Floor. Adults are welcome for a $25 at the door. Youth between 13-20 get in free. Wear a costume, go formal, wear blue jeans or shorts and flip flops. Bring your partner. Come solo. We would love for you to mingle and mashup with these amazing kids. Please click here to enjoy photos from last year’s HATCH Prom.

Going back to the past, if you are one of the many former HATCHlings, please let us know. We want all past and present HATCHlings to walk with us this June in the Pride Parade. So get out your comfy shoes and let’s make this a Silver Anniversary to remember!
