Many of the women in the SPRY Program are familiar with Kindred Spirits, the nightclub by the same name that provided a safe place for the community in the 1980s. Kindred Spirits was known as the place for women to go. Socializing with one another led to social responsibility, organizing fundraisers along with events that built long-lasting friendships and a network that endures to this day.

Owner Marion E. Coleman closed the nightclub in 1989 but continued to be very active in the community, running the House of Coleman printers. Former patrons would stop her all the time and beg her to hold a reunion. Thirteen years later, she pulled together a team of like-minded women to hold a dance as a charitable endeavor. Success! Hundreds and hundreds of women came, along with many of the men who supported the nightclub because of its history helping gay men in the early days of HIV/AIDS. The Celebration Dance has been an annual event since 2002, with other activities like the Golf Tournament and a Holiday Cabaret Sing-A-Long being added along the way to keep women connected to each other while supporting women in need.

Mark your calendars now for the Celebration Dance on August 23 and the Sing-A-Long on December 7.
